Quick answer

The concert is in Tromsø Cathedral at Kirkegata 7, in the city centre on Tromsøya island. Show your ticket at the entrance when the church opens, which is only shortly before the concert. Plan for about 30 minutes of music in a wooden church, wear layers for the walk, and bring children aged 8 or older. The ticket covers admission and the concert, not transport or refreshments.

Finding the cathedral

Tromsø Cathedral stands in a park in the middle of the city, on Tromsøya island, at Kirkegata 7. It is the yellow wooden church, Gothic Revival in style, with a pointed tower at the west end. The white Arctic Cathedral is across the Tromsø Bridge on the mainland side, and it is not where this concert is held. If you are staying in the city centre, you can reach the church on foot. If you are staying on the mainland side, in Tromsdalen, you must cross the Tromsø Bridge, which is 1,036 metres long, to reach the island, so plan the crossing before you leave.

From the airport and the harbour

Tromsø Airport is on the same island as the cathedral. The airport operator, Avinor, lists three ways into town: the Flybussen airport coach, which serves several city-centre hotels, the ordinary public bus, and an express boat that leaves from a quay at Prostneset in the city centre. For the public bus you buy a ticket in the Troms Mobillett app or at the ticket machine at the stop. Check the operators' own timetables for the day you travel, because services change with the season and the day of the week.

The evening in order

The concert fits into a simple sequence, and none of it needs planning beyond the start time on your confirmation. The only decision that changes with your date is how you dress for the walk, which depends on the season. Everything inside the church stays the same from one night to the next. If your hotel is on the mainland side, add the bridge crossing to your plan, and if you are arriving from the airport the same day, allow for the journey into town before you set out for the church.

  • Walk to Kirkegata 7 and look for the yellow wooden church in its park
  • Wait outside until the church opens, which is only shortly before the concert
  • Show your ticket at the entrance and take a seat in the nave
  • Listen to about 30 minutes of music from a small group of professional musicians
  • Leave into the city centre and head back to your hotel

When you arrive

Show your ticket at the entrance to the cathedral. The church opens only shortly before the concert, so arriving long before it means waiting outside, and nothing is gained by it. Your confirmation and the booking calendar both give the start time for your night. Keep the confirmation on your phone, saved before you leave your hotel, so that you do not have to search for it outdoors. If your plans change, cancel through the booking page before the 24-hour window closes and pick another night. Doing this at the hotel takes a minute and removes the one thing that can go wrong on the night.

What to wear

Dress for the walk to the church, not for the concert. Visit Tromsø advises dressing in layers, since it can feel cool by the sea, and that is the right idea here: a warm outer layer you can take off in the church, shoes that grip, and hat and gloves in winter. A concert means sitting still for half an hour, so a layer you can open or remove is worth more than the thickest coat. There is no dress code for the concert, and everyday clothes are fine.

Inside the church

The interior is light, with pale painted ceilings, exposed timber beams, chandeliers and galleries along both sides. At the altar there is a copy, made in 1884, of Adolph Tidemand's painting of the Resurrection. The church has two organs: an original one from the 1860s that was restored in 2013 and 2014, and a newer one installed in 2017. The architect, Christian Heinrich Grosch, designed it in the Gothic Revival style, and the church was completed in 1861. The concert is held in this room, with the audience in the pews.

Hearing the music

The concert lasts about 30 minutes and draws on psalms, folk tunes, traditional songs from Northern Norway and Sámi music. The musicians are professionals, and the programme changes between concerts, so do not expect a set list. Visit Tromsø lists English and Norwegian as the languages offered, so you do not need to speak Norwegian to follow the evening. Because it is a church, keep your phone silent and your voice low, and let the room settle before the first piece. The concert is short, so there is no interval to wait for, and the whole programme is over in about half an hour.

Children and access

Children must be at least 8 years old to attend. Wheelchair access is available, according to Visit Tromsø. If you need to know where wheelchair users sit or which entrance is step-free, put the question to the organiser before you book, since the church is a historic wooden building. For anyone with a long walk ahead, remember that the concert is short and the way back to your hotel is part of the plan, so choose a route you can manage late in the evening. Visit Tromsø also lists the concert as family-friendly.

After the concert

You leave the church into the city centre, so the walk back to a central hotel is a matter of finding your route, not of arranging transport. Look up your way home before the concert, particularly in winter, when pavements can be icy. If you want a drink or a late snack afterwards, remember that the concert is not part of a dinner, so book any meal separately and earlier in the evening, and treat the concert as a quiet end to the day. The cathedral is in the middle of the city, so a late walk back stays in the centre rather than heading out of town.

The light outside

The sky you walk under depends on the date you pick. From late May to late July the sun stays above the horizon in Tromsø, and from late November the city has only a few hours of twilight a day. The church is the same room in both, but the walk to it looks very different. The guide to the light in Tromsø explains what to expect and when, and the booking calendar shows which nights are on sale.

Who this isn't for

If you need a seat chosen in advance, a long concert or a meal with the music, this is not that ticket. Children under 8 cannot attend. If you are looking for a loud or lively night out, a quiet half hour in a church will feel very different. And if you booked the Arctic Cathedral across the bridge, you are in the wrong guide: your concert is at a different church with its own programme.
